Moving from winter into spring hiking means dealing with "moody" weather: one minute it’s a sunny 15°C, and the next you’re caught in a chilly drizzle with muddy trails.
As the snow melts and the trails wake up, your gear needs to be all about breathability, moisture management, and versatility. Here is my favorite gear for navigating the beautiful (and unpredictable) spring season.
Spring is the season of "is it going to rain?" This versatile jacket system is my go-to because it adapts to whatever the weather throws at you.
Three Ways to Wear: The outer waterproof shell is perfect for those unexpected spring showers. The detachable inner fleece jacket offers lightweight warmth on crisp mornings. And when both are zipped together, you get a cozy, fully waterproof barrier against cold wind and rain.
Smart & Practical: Beyond its adaptability, it features multiple zippered pockets to keep my essentials secure, adjustable cuffs and hem to lock in warmth, and a durable, scratch-resistant outer fabric that handles tough trails with ease.
Spring hiking usually means crossing small streams from snowmelt or navigating soggy meadows. Made for women, these are my go-to hiking boots and have been for years.
The Gore-Tex Advantage: These boots are essential for spring because they are 100% waterproof. You can step through a puddle with total confidence that your socks will stay dry.
Vibram Sole: The grip on these is legendary. When the trail is slick and muddy, the deep lugs give you the traction you need to stay upright.
While this is a "winter" hat, it’s actually brilliant for early spring mornings.
Temperature Control: When you start at 7:00 AM, it's freezing—pull the ear flaps down. By 10:00 AM, the sun is out—flip the flaps up to let your head breathe while the visor keeps the bright spring sun out of your eyes.
Moisture Wicking: The cationic fleece is great at pulling sweat away from your skin as the day warms up.
I never hike without poles. Between the loose mud, wet rocks and the occasional patch of leftover ice, balance and stability is everything.
Save Your Knees: Spring trails can be heavy and soft, which puts extra strain on your joints. These 7075 aluminum poles take the weight off your knees.
Tungsten Tips: The tips bite into the soft earth, while the included "mud baskets" prevent your poles from sinking too deep into the muck.
The grass might look green and inviting in April, but it’s almost certainly soaked. And nobody wants a chilly booty after having a snack.
Stay Dry: These pads are 100% waterproof. You can throw them down on a wet rock or damp grass and enjoy your lunch without getting a "wet bottom."
Lightweight: At only 300g, they clip to the outside of your pack so you don't even have to open your bag to take a quick break.
Just because it's spring doesn't mean the mountain tops aren't chilly. A warm lunch changes everything.
9 Hours Hot: This rugged, BPA-free container keeps chili, soup, or pasta perfectly hot for 9 hours, so your lunch is steaming whenever you're ready to eat.
Built-In Spoon: My favorite feature? The lid holds a folding stainless steel lepel (spoon), so you never forget your utensils. The outer cap also doubles as a convenient serving bowl.
